I recently spent time exploring what really works for sharing design portfolios. What I attempted initially was a generic gallery site that lacked proper focus. The results were underwhelming at best. A big lesson was how important it is to show work in its intended setting.
I found a useful article on exactly this problem at https://dribbble.com/.
When I narrowed down to only finished projects the response was night and day. I also learned to break down each project into the problem, my process, and the final result. Including every concept draft only confused people who saw the gallery. Trimming the fat turned out to be the single best edit I performed.
Three friends in the field gave me honest opinions on which pieces held up. What they emphasized was the need for storytelling around each piece. Their critique helped me reframe the whole display as a problem-solving showcase.
The final setup shows only eight projects but each one tells a complete story. I stopped chasing fancy effects and focused instead on clarity. My recommendation to anyone starting out is begin with a brutal edit. |
